Salzburg Research Forschungsgesellschaft m.b.H (SRFG), Austria

Salzburg Research Forschungsgesellschaft is the non-profit research organisation of the State of Salzburg. Salzburg Research conducts applied research in the areas of information and communication technologies with a focus on creating and managing digital content. We presently employ 70 researchers across our application areas of Digital Media, eTourism, IT-enhanced Learning and eHealth.

The KMT (Knowledge and Media Technology) group within Salzburg Research works on combining knowledge based modelling and inferencing with multimedia and database technology. For example, we have built authoring tools for annotating multimedia presentations with semantic mark-up coming from predefined knowledge models (CULTOS, FP5). We also specialise in certain types of applications and user scenarios. Another area of expertise is the combination of language technologies with the challenges of the WWW. In the VICODI project (FP5), we developed a contextualisation technique to match term frequency vectors with given ontological terms. In the METOKIS project (FP6) we developed task models that can be matched with knowledge-based hypermedia content. KiWi (FP7) combines the wiki method of collaborative content creation with the technologies of the Semantic Web. IKS (FP7) is an integrated project which is coordinated by SRFG and aims to provide an open source technology platform for semantically enhanced content management systems. Tasks attributed and relevant prior experience
The KMT group (
http://kis.salzburgresearch.at) focuses on methods and tools that presents to knowledge in an easily accessible and processable format in order to significantly improve the machine processing and user interaction. Current research topics are semantic social software, data models, software tools for structuring and managing knowledge models, model based media assets and information processing over the internet.
SRFG will be WP leader of iCARDEA Framework for Patient Empowerment and will be responsible for the development of a Personal Healthcare Record System, which models and manages healthcare data of patient. Furthermore, SRFG will also build an interoperability mechanism on top of PHR system in order to let iCARDEA system retrieve information and integrate them in clinical follow-up workflows automatically. SRFG will be responsible from the development of a patient feedback mechanism and interfaces. Finally, SRFG will manage Innovation and Intellectual Property task.
In 2007, the County of Salzburg commissioned an independent policy study on future needs of Health Care in Salzburg. Following recommendations of the study, Salzburg Research and SALK are currently developing a regional competence centre for eHealth in Salzburg. In autumn 2008, a collaboration agreement was agreed and signed in early 2009. Currently, a proposal is being developed for a national competence centre on e-Medication (to be submitted in September 2009). Applications for the post of project manager in eHealth have been invited with a view to filling the post from July 2009. (

Another major contribution of SRFG will be iCARDEA Testing and Validation Framework. As SRFG aims to develop experimentally sound protocols for testing usability and performance of iCARDEA components to carry out the testing at regular intervals and to document the rate at which the system's performance improves over time.
