Foundation of Research and Technology Hellas, Greece

FORTH is a major national research centre partly funded by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology of the Hellenic Ministry of Development. FORTH-Institute of Computer Science (FORTH-ICS) is one of the seven institutes of FORTH located in the island of Crete and a pioneering contributor towards the deployment and adoption of Information Society Technologies in Greece and plays a leading role in worldwide efforts towards the development of an Information Society accessible and acceptable by all citizens.
The AmI Programme at the Institute of Computer Science-FORTH constitutes a platform for cooperative research towards developing and studying AmI-related technologies and assessing their impact on the individual, as well as society as a whole, but also as a unique showcase for demonstrating the potential added-value and benefits of AmI technologies in different aspects of everyday life, including healthcare. Relevant research and development work is predominantly human-, rather than technology-, centred and focuses on selected key application domains: housing, work, health, security, education, transport, and entertainment.
FORTH-ICS carries out world-class research in the wider area of eHealth. For almost 20 years, it has RTD activities in the development of innovative computer methods and tools that address the creation of the integrated electronic health record (I-EHR) and its transformation from a data repository into an active record that enables patient-centered healthcare. FORTH-ICS is committed to the consistent implementation of interoperability standards in health care as the means of improving quality and access to health services. The OpenECG network promoting the consistent implementation of ECG standards has more than 1000 members from 65 countries worldwide. Furthermore, FORTH-ICS is a founding member of HL7-Hellas, involved in the implementation of health informatics standards such as HL7 and DICOM since 1994. FORTH-ICS hosts the W3C office in Greece.

Tasks attributed and relevant prior experience
FORTH will serve as a task leader in Task 3.2 (Survey of the state of Art Technologies and architecture), Task 6.2/6.3 (Providing Interoperability with EHRs/PHRs), Task 6.4 (Code Mapping among Healthcare Code Systems), and Task 6.5 (Security and Privacy of the Interoperability Layer) investing its expertise in standards and interoperability but also the follow-up of global trends through its involvement in International Standards Developing Organization such as HL7. FORTH will also exploit its extensive experience in Functional Tests and End-user validation by leading the relevant Task 8.1.
